Oh – The legs are cooked!!
It’s Sunday and our plan was to leave nice and early this morning, in the hope that we didn’t get too much traffic heading to Constanta. We were lucky, although it was pretty busy with cars, we only had one truck pass us.👌🏻

It was still hilly today for most of the trip (or maybe it’s just that our quads are sore and we’re feeling every incline.)
20kms out from our destination we crossed the Canal.
The Canal was an ancient concept. With various failed proposals dating back over a couple of centuries.
Then there was the 1949-1953 concept. Under the communist regime, construction on the canal was a horrific period for political prisoners. They were given picks and shovels and made to dig by hand. Tens of Thousands Romanians died. The project halted when money ran out.
Then in 1976 (under Ceausescu) work started again. It was completed in 1987.

There were several hairy intersections to contend with as we got close to the city. (Something similar to the lighthorse exchange) and once we got to the the outskirts it was basically ‘running the gauntlet’ until we reached the tree lined inner parts of the city.

A little further along Michael spotted a soccer game going on.

It’s been an amazing adventure. It has definitely been more challenging than our last trips, but we find it’s a great way to see places that you just can’t do on a traditional holiday.
We are spending a few days here in Constanta and then heading to Bucharest. We have some time before we fly home, so will pop a couple of ‘tweeny’ posts here and there to keep you updated as to where we are. If you don’t hear from us – just assume we are lying near a beach somewhere drinking Mojitos. (Or living like the locals in strange and exotic cities.)

Oh, we had a nice moment as we were cycling into the city – a group of ‘real’ cyclist rode towards us and all gave us a wave and a bit of a ‘hoorah’ moment. (They must have known what we’d done;)
