Our 7am start was too early for the hotel Brekky, so the gorgeous girls at reception made us a picnic lunch for our journey today 🙏🏻

It was a day of contrasts for the path today. One minute we were bumping over narrow footpaths, the next we were on a beautiful new track. (If you’re planning on following this route – it’ll be a new path the whole way soon! 😉

The not so good…
The really good.👍🏻

We passed this aluminium factory in Almafuzito – it was the largest in Central Europe and operated from 1950-1997, producing 10 million tonnes of aluminium oxide from bauxite ore.

The message above the door next to the patriotic workers says – ‘work for us is a matter of honour and duty’ (there’s a tagline for a business)
A bit further along was our coffee stop. Nyergesujfalu.
Ordering a white coffee is tricky in regional towns where not many people speak English. So I have a few lines ready to go on my phone.

Only 15 more kms (travelling mainly on the road now) and we were in our home for the night.(only 55kms total today)

Esztergom, the medieval capital of Hungary. This city stands on the banks of the Danube River and was the capital of medieval Hungary, enjoying this title from the 10th to the 13th century. It’s also known as the “Rome of Hungary” because it’s filled with countless monuments, palaces and temples.

A Mongol invasion in 1249 caused the Royal court to move to Buda(pest) which then became the capital. Turkish occupation in the 15th and 16th centuries left the city in ruins and recovery was slow.

It was also badly damaged in WW2.

We checked into our hotel and wandered around for the rest of the day.

Just arriving in town.
Doing my blog from the lovely cafe.
Yes – we’re going Up the steps.
In 1000 the first Hungarian King, Istvan 1 was crowned here.
A little church at the top.
Slovakia is on the other side of the river.
St Stephen’s Basilica. The view was worth the climb!
