An hour and a half later we were coming into Linz – the third largest city in Austria. The track was all over the place, but the signage on posts and painted on the road was fabulous – we really didn’t need Kamoot at all to get into the middle of the city.

Then we left Linz and made our way to Mauthausen. About another 14kms down the river.
We rode up a 2km climb at 14% incline (okay – we walked) to visit Mauthausen concentration camp, preserved as a memorial to victims of Nazi atrocities.

It was an unbelievable and unimaginable place, but something the world needs to remember. Just too sad.
By the time we left it was mid afternoon and 36degrees. We were ready for a beer. We got talking to a fellow from the UK also riding the Danube – he had another 40km to do today! We were glad we were staying just down the hill a couple of kms.
